Re-examining Japanese records of moribund and extinct Formosan languages

Date:

Abstract: There have been many important contributions by Japanese scholars to the linguistic study of Formosan languages. Of these, the data collected by Naoyoshi Ogawa, Erin Asai, and Shigeru Tsuchida remain some of the most important pieces of material in the study of languages which have now become extinct or moribund. In this talk, I reflect on the materials they collected, why they remain important today, and the role they will play in future research.
